Mission

The Path to Pluto, Arrokoth, and Beyond

Mission Design

A direct airplane flight might be the quickest way across the country, but the fastest route to Pluto requires a trip past Jupiter. The giant planet's gravity can actually "slingshot" a spacecraft toward the outer solar system.

There are two reasons why the New Horizons science team wanted to reach Pluto as soon as possible. The first had to do with Pluto's atmosphere: Since 1989, Pluto has been moving farther from the Sun, getting less heat every year. As Pluto gets colder scientists expect its atmosphere will "freeze out," so the team wanted to arrive while there was a chance to study a thicker atmosphere.

The second reason was to map as much of Pluto and Charon as possible. On Earth, the North Pole and other areas above the Arctic Circle have half a year of night and half a year of daylight. In the same way, parts of Pluto or Charon never see the Sun for decades at a time. The longer the wait, the more of Pluto and Charon would have been shadowed in a long "arctic night," impeding the spacecraft's ability to take pictures of the surface in reflected sunlight.

Prime Opportunity

By launching in January 2006, New Horizons could take advantage of a gravity assist from Jupiter. In February 2007, New Horizons passed through the Jupiter system at more than 50,000 mph, ending up on a path that got it to Pluto on July 14, 2015.

During the cruise from Jupiter to Pluto, the mission team monitored the health of the spacecraft while planning and practicing for the encounter with Pluto and Charon. At the same time, observers used telescopes from Earth to find and study Kuiper Belt Objects that the spacecraft could fly by after Pluto (as part of a possible extended mission). The "KBOs" are ancient, icy bodies that orbit beyond Neptune.

Science at Jupiter

Science opportunities at Jupiter included meteorology, aurora studies, magnetospheric sampling, dust sampling and surface mapping, compositional mapping and atmospheric studies of Jupiter's large moons.

Closing In

The cameras on New Horizons took data on Pluto and its moons months before the spacecraft arrived. Pluto and Charon first appeared as unresolved bright dots, but the planet and its moons appeared larger as the encounter date approached. Three months from the closest approach - when Pluto was about 65 million miles (105 million kilometers) away - the cameras on the spacecraft could make the first maps. For those three months, the mission team took pictures and spectra measurements.

Pluto and Charon each rotate once every 6.4 Earth days. For the last two Pluto days before encounter (11 to 12 Earth days), the team compiled maps and gathered spectra measurements of Pluto and Charon every half-day. The team was then able to check for changes on the surface over a Pluto day, at a scale of about 30 miles (48 kilometers).

The Encounter

At closest approach, the spacecraft came about 7,750 miles (12,500 kilometers) from Pluto and about 17,900 miles (28,800 kilometers) from Charon. On the way in, the spacecraft looked for ultraviolet emissions from Pluto's atmosphere and made global maps of Pluto and Charon in green, blue, red, and a special wavelength that is sensitive to methane frost on the surface. It also took spectral maps in the near-infrared, telling the science team about Pluto's and Charon's surface compositions and locations and temperatures of these materials.

During the half-hour when the spacecraft was closest to Pluto or its largest moon, it took close-up pictures in both visible and near-infrared wavelengths. The best pictures of Pluto depicted surface features as small as 200 feet (about 60 meters) across.

Even after the spacecraft passed Pluto and its moons, its work was far from done. Looking back at the mostly dark night-time side of Pluto or Charon was the best way to spot haze in the atmosphere, to look for rings, and to figure out whether their surfaces are smooth or rough. Also, the spacecraft l flew through the shadows cast by Pluto and Charon; it looked back at the Sun and Earth, watching the light from the Sun or the radio waves from transmitters on Earth. The best time to measure the atmosphere happened as the spacecraft watches the Sun and Earth set behind Pluto and Charon.

Beyond Pluto

After passing through the Pluto system the spacecraft retargeted itself for an encounter with a KBO. In late 2015 the team selected a small KBO known as 2014 MU69 – now officially named Arrokoth (Powhatan/Algonquian for "sky") – that orbits nearly a billion miles beyond Pluto.

Arrokoth is just the kind of ancient KBO, formed where it orbits now, that the 2003 National Academy of Sciences Planetary Decadal Survey desired the New Horizons mission to fly by. Operationally, the Arrokoth cost less fuel to reach than the mission's other candidate targets, leaving more fuel for the flyby, for ancillary science, and greater fuel reserves to protect against the unforeseen.

The flyby of Arrokoth (then nicknamed "Ultima Thule") was similar to the Pluto encounter; the spacecraft mapped the KBO, got its composition from infrared spectroscopy and four-color maps, and checked for an atmosphere and moons (which it didn't find).

Launch

Launch: January 19, 2006

Launch Vehicle: Atlas V 551 first stage; Centaur second stage; STAR 48B solid rocket third stage

Location: Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida

Trajectory: To Pluto via Jupiter Gravity Assist

The Voyage

Early Cruise: The first 13 months included spacecraft and instrument checkouts, instrument calibrations, small trajectory correction maneuvers and rehearsals for the Jupiter encounter. New Horizons passed the orbit of Mars on April 7, 2006; it also tracked a small asteroid, later named "APL," in June 2006.

Jupiter Encounter: Closest approach occurred February 28, 2007. Moving about 51,000 miles per hour (about 23 kilometers per second), New Horizons flew about three to four times closer to Jupiter than the Cassini spacecraft, coming within 1.4 million miles (2.3 million kilometers) of the large planet.

Interplanetary Cruise: Activities during the approximately eight-year cruise to Pluto included annual spacecraft and instrument checkouts, trajectory corrections, instrument calibrations and Pluto encounter rehearsals.

During the cruise, New Horizons also crossed the orbits of Saturn (June 8, 2008), Uranus (March 18, 2011) and Neptune (August 25, 2014).

By the Book

New Horizons observations of the Pluto system were planned well in advance, with each instrument programmed to perform specific functions as the spacecraft sped toward, past and beyond Pluto and its moons. Here's a look at the playbook the team followed for using the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) and Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC) component of the Ralph instrument on approach to Pluto.

Beyond Pluto: Kuiper Belt Possibilities

New Horizons was designed to fly beyond the Pluto system and explore additional Kuiper Belt objects. New Horizons carries extra hydrazine fuel for a KBO flyby; its communications system can work from far beyond Pluto and its scientific instruments perform in light levels even lower than the dim sunlight at Pluto.

The New Horizons team had to undertake a dedicated search for small KBOs the spacecraft could reach. In the early 2000s, no such KBOs had even been discovered. The National Academy of Sciences directed New Horizons to fly by small KBOs about 20 to 50 kilometers (about 12 to 30 miles) across, which are more likely to be primitive bodies, less well-formed than planets like Pluto.

Read more about the discovery of the prospective, post-Pluto New Horizons targets.

In 2014, using the Hubble Space Telescope, New Horizons science team members discovered three KBOs – all in the range of 20-55 kilometers across, and all with possible flyby dates in late 2018 or in 2019 — a billion miles beyond Pluto.

In summer 2015, after the Pluto flyby, the New Horizons team worked with NASA to choose the best candidate among the three – and zeroed in on a small KBO known as 2014 MU69 (now offically names Arrokoth) that orbits nearly a billion miles beyond Pluto. In fall 2015, operators fired the engines aboard New Horizons – at the optimal time to minimize the fuel required to reach the selected target – to begin the journey.

All NASA missions that seek to do more exploration beyond their primary objectives submit a proposal to NASA to fund an extended mission; the agency approved the New Horizons extended mission in July 2016.

Pluto-Bound New Horizons Sees Changes in Jupiter System

The voyage of NASA's Pluto-bound New Horizons spacecraft through the Jupiter system provided a bird's-eye view of a dynamic planet that had changed since previous close-up looks by NASA spacecraft.

New Horizons passed Jupiter on Feb. 28, 2007, riding the planet's gravity to boost its speed and shave three years off its trip to Pluto. It was the eighth spacecraft to visit Jupiter – but a combination of trajectory, timing and technology allowed it to explore details no probe had seen before, such as lightning near the planet's poles, the life cycle of fresh ammonia clouds, boulder-size clumps speeding through the planet's faint rings, the structure inside volcanic eruptions on its moon Io, and the path of charged particles traversing the previously unexplored length of the planet's long magnetic tail.

"The Jupiter encounter was successful beyond our wildest dreams," says New Horizons Principal Investigator Alan Stern. "Not only did it prove out our spacecraft and put it on course to reach Pluto in 2015, it was a chance for us to take sophisticated instruments to places in the Jovian system where other spacecraft couldn't go, and to return important data that adds tremendously to our understanding of the solar system's largest planet and its moons, rings and atmosphere."

From January through June 2007, New Horizons' seven science instruments made more than 700 separate observations of the Jovian system – twice the activity planned at Pluto – with most of them coming in the eight days around closest approach to Jupiter. "We carefully selected observations that complemented previous missions, so that we could focus on outstanding scientific issues that needed further investigation," says New Horizons Jupiter Science Team Leader Jeff Moore, of NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif. "The Jupiter system is constantly changing and New Horizons was in the right place at the right time to see some exciting developments."

Jovian weather was high on the list, as New Horizons' visible light, infrared and ultraviolet remote-sensing instruments probed Jupiter's atmosphere for data on cloud structure and composition. They saw clouds form from ammonia welling up from the lower atmosphere and heat-induced lightning strikes in the polar regions – the first polar lightning ever observed beyond Earth, demonstrating that heat moves through water clouds at virtually all latitudes across Jupiter. They made the most detailed size and speed measurements yet of "waves" that run the width of planet and indicate violent storm activity below. Additionally, New Horizons snapped the first close-up images of the Little Red Spot, a nascent storm about half the size of Jupiter's larger Great Red Spot and about 70 percent of Earth's diameter, gathering new information on storm dynamics.

Under a range of lightning and viewing angles, New Horizons also captured the clearest images ever of the tenuous Jovian ring system. In them, scientists spotted clumps of debris that may indicate a recent impact inside the rings, or some more exotic phenomenon; movies made from New Horizons images also offer an unprecedented look at ring dynamics, with the tiny inner moons Metis and Adrastea shepherding the materials around the rings. A search for smaller moons inside the rings – and possible new sources of the dusty material – found no bodies wider than a kilometer.

The mission's investigations of Jupiter's four largest moons focused on Io, the closest to Jupiter and whose active volcanoes blast tons of material into the Jovian magnetosphere (and beyond). New Horizons spied 11 different volcanic plumes of varying size, three of which were seen for the first time and one – a spectacular 200-mile-high eruption rising above the volcano Tvashtar – that offered an unprecedented opportunity to trace the structure and motion of the plume as it condensed at high altitude and fell back to the moon's surface. In addition, New Horizons spotted the infrared glow from at least 36 Io volcanoes, and measured lava temperatures up to 1,900 degrees Fahrenheit, similar to many terrestrial volcanoes.

New Horizons' global map of Io's surface backs the moon's status as the solar system's most active body, showing more than 20 geological changes since the Galileo Jupiter orbiter provided the last close-up look in 2001. The remote imagers also kept watch on Io in the darkness of Jupiter's shadow, noting mysterious glowing gas clouds above dozens of volcanoes. Scientists suspect that this gas helps to resupply Io's atmosphere.

New Horizons' flight down Jupiter's magnetotail gave it an unprecedented look at the vast region dominated by the planet's strong magnetic field. Looking specifically at the fluxes of charged particles that flow hundreds of millions of miles beyond the giant planet, the New Horizons particle detectors saw evidence that tons of material from Io's volcanoes move down the tail in large, dense, slow-moving blobs. By analyzing the observed variations in particle fluxes over a wide range of energies and scales, New Horizons scientists are exploring how the volcanic gases from Io are ionized, trapped and energized by Jupiter's magnetic field, then ultimately ejected from the system.

The Pluto System Revealed

The 15 July 2015 flyby of Pluto was the culmination of a decades-long quest to see and understand the Solar System's most distant planet. But it turned out to be a new beginning, revealing for the first time the potential complexity of small (or dwarf) planet systems in the Kuiper belt. New Horizons' seven instruments took over 50 Gb of data at Pluto — on approach, passing through the system, and on departure. Pluto was revealed to be a geologically and meteorologically active world. Its size and density were accurately determined; the former turned out to be at the upper range of previous Earth-based estimates. Pluto remains, for now, the physically largest world in the Kuiper belt. Made largely of rock, about 2/3 by mass, but with substantial ice and carbonaceous (organic) material, Pluto appears to have differentiated, possessing a rock core and predominantly water ice mantle. Surface layers and deposits of volatile ices such as nitrogen (N2), methane (CH4), and carbon monoxide (CO), along with dark, reddish, organic matter often referred to as tholins, complete the picture.

Pluto's volatile ices can sublimate and condense under the influence of even the feeble sunlight at Pluto's distance, and N2-ice in particular is soft enough to flow across Pluto's incredibly cold surface (about 40 K as measured by New Horizons). And flow it does, from high standing water-ice-rich terrains, through gaps in the mountains, and down to a vast, frozen nitrogen-ice sea called Sputnik Planitia (SP for short). This icy plain is actually a giant ice sheet, filling to a depth of several kilometers a great impact basin over 1000 km across, itself the product of the collision of a large (roughly 200-km wide) Kuiper belt object with Pluto over 4 billion years ago. Overall, Pluto's topography is rugged, with some water-ice mountain blocks reaching heights of 5 km. The density of impact craters on Pluto varies widely, from heavily cratered terrains in Cthulhu Regio that must date from the earliest days of the Solar System, to Sputnik Planitia itself, which betrays no impact craters at all in New Horizons' highest resolution images (about 70 m/pixel). The solid nitrogen ice in SP is organized into giant convection cells, slowly churning on a several 100,000 year time scale, transporting Pluto's modest interior heat outward. The position of SP on Pluto's tidal axis (the imaginary line that runs through the centers of Pluto and Charon) may not be coincidence; rather, it could be evidence of the slip, or polar wander, of Pluto's surface to a preferred orientation. Such a slip is circumstantial evidence that under Pluto's water ice mantle, perhaps at a depth of close to 150 km, lies an inner ocean of water.

Pluto's atmosphere was measured by New Horizons UV solar and radio occultations. At present it is quite thin, about 11.5 𝜇bar at the surface, and dominated by N2 gas in vapor-pressure equilibrium with surface N2 ice. Methane is the next most abundant gas and several simple hydrocarbons were discovered as well. The temperature in the atmosphere rises over the first 25 km or so of altitude, peaking at around 115 K, and gradually falling with increasing altitude thereafter. The temperature at Pluto's exobase, 100s of km above the surface, was much lower than previously thought, which means that Pluto's atmosphere is not escaping as fast as previously believed. Even more interesting, the dominant gas escaping is the lighter component, CH4, not N2. As thin as Pluto's atmosphere is, it is capable of transporting sublimed ices from one part of Pluto's surface to another, and downslope wind speeds are great enough to form methane particle "sand dunes" at the edge of SP. But the best surprise was saved for last. Turning New Horizons' imaging telescopes to look back at Pluto on departure, multiple haze layers were discovered wrapping completely around the planet, extending over several 100 km in height above the surface.

Pluto's satellites did not disappoint as well. Charon, the large moon, has a surface dominated by water ice and no atmosphere. New Horizons' LEISA spectrometer confirmed the presence of some form of ammonia ice across much of the surface, along with concentrations associated with specific impact craters. Charon's poles are apparently stained red from CH4 escaping from Pluto but cold trapped and radiation processed there. Charon is not geologically active today, and has sufficient impact craters on its surface the New Horizons science team members estimate its overall surface age to approach 4 billion years. But that does not mean its geological past was anything but spectacular. Much of Charon's northern hemisphere visible to New Horizons at closest approach is broken into great crustal blocks and canyons many kilometers deep. In contrast, the southern hemisphere is slightly younger plains, informally named Vulcan Planitia (VP), and appears to have been resurfaced by a series of thick, icy — or cryovolcanic — flows. The totally of Charon's geological history suggests that it too is differentiated and possessed an internal ocean, but owing to the moon's smaller size relative to Pluto, it cooled and its ocean froze, causing it surface to expand and rupture, which in turn facilitated the cryovolcanic eruptions we see in VP.

Rounding out the tour of the Pluto system were studies of the 4 small moons, Styx, Nix, Kerberos, and Hydra. These moons, discovered after the New Horizons mission started, were imaged on a best effort basis. They are irregular, on the order of 10 to 50 km across, and highly reflective. Infrared spectra indicate surfaces of almost pure water ice. These moons orbit in the same plane as Pluto and Charon but at sufficiently great distances from the two that tides have not slowed any of the small moons to the synchronous spin state common among regular satellites elsewhere in the solar system. In fact, some of spin states are bizarre: all four highly elongated objects rotate much faster than synchronous, with their rotational poles highly inclined relative to those of Pluto and Charon (which are aligned). The relativities and surface compositions of Pluto's small moons are quite different from most Kuiper belt objects in their size class, which are much darker and spectrally featureless, but are consistent with being debris from the giant impact that created the Pluto-Charon binary at the beginning of solar system history.

Arrokoth Flyby

Pluto is the largest object in the Kuiper Belt, the vast swarm of hundreds of thousands of objects orbiting the Sun beyond Neptune. Many of these objects have been undisturbed and unaltered since the beginning of the solar system, and thus harbor many secrets about the formation of the planets. After the Pluto flyby, New Horizons headed deeper into the Kuiper Belt, providing an opportunity to explore other, smaller and more primitive Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs). An extensive search with ground-based telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope resulted in the discovery, in summer 2014, of two KBOs that were close enough to the spacecraft's trajectory that the spacecraft could be diverted to perform a close flyby of one of them.

Shortly after the Pluto flyby, in August 2015, the team chose one of these, 2014 MU69 (officially named "Arrokoth" in November 2019) as the flyby target. In early November 2015 New Horizons fired its thrusters to alter the direction of its trajectory by 1/4 of a degree, to set a course toward a close flyby of Arrokoth at 12:33 a.m. EST on January 1, 2019.

Flight path diagram of New Horizons reaching Arrokoth

On the way to MU69 and beyond, the spacecraft's path cuts through the densest part of the Kuiper Belt, passing within 1 astronomical unit (the distance between the Earth and the Sun, which is about 150 million kilometers or 93 million miles) of about a dozen other known KBOs. Though none of these will appear as more than a point of light in New Horizons' cameras, the spacecraft observes them from unique angles not possible from Earth to learn about their surface properties, and searches for moons and rings with greater sensitivity than the most powerful telescopes on or near Earth. New Horizons is also taking pictures of several larger but more distant Kuiper Belt objects, including several dwarf planets, to measure their brightnesses from its unique perspective.

The approach to Arrokoth began in August 2018, when the spacecraft took its first pictures of its target, which appeared as a faint dot barely visible against a crowded field of background stars. Through Fall 2018 the spacecraft continued to take regular images of Arrokoth as it got closer and brighter, using them to check that it was on the right course, and firing its thrusters to make course corrections as necessary. In early December, the spacecraft performed an intensive campaign of imaging to look for any dangerous rings or moons around Arrokoth -- which it did not find.

In the last few days of the approach, the navigation team analyzed the latest images of Arrokoth taken by New Horizons to refine estimates of the KBO's position relative to the spacecraft. The team uplinked the updated information to New Horizons, so that the spacecraft could more accurately time its observations and point its cameras.

Intensive science observations began 24 hours before the flyby. The spacecraft took frequent grayscale, color, near-infrared and ultraviolet observations of Arrokoth as it rotated, to investigate its shape, composition, and any possible degassing, on all sides of the object. Long-exposure images of the space surrounding Arrokoth searched for rings or moons and determine their orbits. The closest approach observations, taken during the hour or so nearest closest approach, needed to account for the fact that Arrokoth's position was uncertain. Observations thus consisted of a series of long scans to obtain color and grayscale images, and infrared spectra, of all the possible places where the KBO might have been.

After the closest approach, New Horizons pointed its ultraviolet instrument at the Sun to look for absorption of ultraviolet light by any gases being released by MU69 (though detection of outgassing was unlikely). It also made additional searches for rings around the KBO. Four hours after the flyby, the spacecraft turned briefly to Earth to report that the flyby was successful. A few hours after that it began downlinking the roughly seven gigabytes of data acquired during the flyby.
